The Canadian Society of Environmental Biologists is a non-profit registered society primarily interested in the management of Canadian Natural Resources based on sound ecological principles.

The Society originated in the late 1950's as a small group of canadian fish and wildlife biologists. Today CSEB has progressed to encompass a wide range of members whose interests lie within environmentally related biological disciplines, such as wildlife, fishers, soils, zoology and limnology. The members' training and professional outlook present an informed view on problems in the management of Canada's natural environment. The Society has chapters in eight geographic regions: Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and the Territories.

The Ontario Chapter plays an active part in many issues affecting the province of Ontario province and represents environmental biologists from a wide range of fields and interests.

NATALIE HELFERTY

ONTARIO REGIONAL DIRECTOR

(2ND VICE PRESIDENT)

Natalie Helferty became GTA Chapter Chair in April 2001 and then Ontario Regional Director in October 2003.

Natalie is a freelance ecologist with a diverse background in planning, land trusts and species at risk. Master's work in amphibian ecology and conservation biology. Her on-going efforts to protect amphibians and their habitats across the Oak Ridges Moraine has led Natalie to be bestowed with the monickers of "Frog Woman", and more recently "Salamander Lady" after having discovered the northern-most population of Jefferson salamander in Jefferson Forest in Oak Ridges. Hailing from Richmond Hill, Natalie is continuing her efforts at ensuring proper land use planning by helping to found two new groups, the Conservation Development Alliance of Ontario and The NOAH Project, a bioregional natural heritage system to connect up the Niagara Escarpment--Oak Ridges Moraine--Algonquin to Adirondack across southern Ontario. Natalie is dedicated to ensuring that environmental stewardship by landowners becomes a top priority.

GRANT LAFONTAINE

ONTARIO REGIONAL DIRECTOR

 

Grant Lafontaine is a Project Scientist/Biologist with Jacques Whitford. Grant has good knowledge of terrestrial systems and field skills, including knowledge of bird identification and ecology, vegetation communities and other aspects of the natural environment. Grant graduated from Trent University in 1995 with an Honours B.Sc., major in Biology. He has completed the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources training for Ecological Land Classification (ELC) for Southern Ontario. Prior to working at Jacques Whitford, Grant had spent years working in the capacity of environmental inspector at TransCanada PipeLines and Alliance Pipeline. More recently, Grant worked for the Greater Toronto Airports Authority Environment Department, where amongst his various duties he advised on wildlife control and monitored surface water quality. Since joining Jacques Whitford, Grant has been involved in a number of environmental assessments for wind farm projects. This work has included spring and fall avian migration monitoring programs, breeding bird and raptor surveys, and ELC along Lake Erie and Lake Huron.

WENDY THOMSON

GTA CHAPTER CHAIR

 

Born in Scotland, Wendy graduated with a BSc Honours in Physics and MSc in Natural Resource Management.

After graduating she worked as an ecologist at the sand dune ecosystem, Kenfig Special Area of Conservation and then later the UK quango, the Countryside Council for Wales. Within CCW, Wendy performed roles such as an ecological Phase I grassland surveyor and later as an ecologist writing management plans for Y Berwyn moorland Special Area of Conservation.

She emigrated to Canada in the late nineties and since she has performed numerous positions with the Canadian Wildlife Service, Conservation Council of Ontario, Ontario Bird Banding Association and Toronto Bird Observatory as well as being employed in marketing by Xerox Canada since 1999.

Wendy is currently Editor in Chief/
/Publisher of ElectricGreen Environmental News and Treasurer of the Public Spaces Appreciation Association of Ontario.. Her current projects include the "At home with nature" symposium for the Society of Conservation Biology and founder of the Environmental Womens Alliance.
