As a the
final installment of our environmental monitoring and assessment
series our meeting was on compilation and interpretation of
results plus statistical methods.
Speakers Tom
Enns and Patrick Sun, ESRI,
provided a demo of ArcGIS plus an overview of statistical methods
for natural resource management.
ArcGIS is a family of software products - a complete, single,
integrated system for geographic data creation, management,
integration, and analysis.
ArcGIS
8.3 includes a variety of products that enable users to produce
maps
from obtained vector data (georeferenced data of lines, points,
and polygons) and raster data (non-georeferenced data like aerial
photographs and satellite images). The level of manipulation
of data ranges from low (ArcReader-free) to medium (ArcView)
to high (ArcEditor and ArcInfo). Additional packages available
include ArcPublisher to publish maps to the
web in .pmf format. Extensions are available for ArcGIS including:
Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, Tracking
Analyst and Survey Analyst.
Tom
and Patrick also presented http://www.geographynetwork.ca/
an online resource for sharing geographical content including
maps and data.
