Black Creek Pioneer Village is a restored 19th-century rural Victorian
community located in northwest Toronto. Daniel and Elizabeth Stong
were original settlers on the land where Black Creek Pioneer Village
now stands. In 1816, they began their married life together in rural
York County. Faced with one hundred acres of wilderness, forests
of white pine, oak and elm, they cleared the land for farming and
built their first home - a small but substantial log house. A grain
barn, piggery, smoke house and finally, a larger second home were
added over the next few years. The Stong farm buildings now form
the heart of Black Creek Pioneer Village. Today smoke still curls
from the chimneys and the homes still welcome visitors.
With
over 35 carefully restored 1860s shops and homes, Black Creek Pioneer
Village re-creates the life and times of a 19th-century Victorian
village. During your visit, talk to the blacksmith, the cabinet
maker and others about their crafts, visit the doctor's house, Roblin's
Mill and water wheel, see demonstrations by entertaining villagers
in period dress, visit the farm animals, explore a community of
century-old buildings, delight in the many gardens, and much more.
Black Creek is managed by the Toronto Region Conservation Authority
TRCA.
Dinner
and some meetings will be held at the adjacent Blade
Restaurant at the Ice Gardens.
